“L’arte non consiste nel rappresentare cose nuove,
bensì nel rappresentarle con novità”

Ugo Foscolo

ArtisTie entrusts “its own cable tie” to the creative explosion of 90 students from SID. An experience of cross-contamination between technique and creativity. The result of this experience… not only artistic expressions but objects characterized by a function, created freely and unbound by any convention.

Eddy Antonello - SID Teacher (Scuola Italiana Design)

The SapiSelco project was integrated into the Basic Design course as part of a Tinkering activity. Tinkering is the art of finding resourceful, alternative solutions by drawing on the knowledge and skills everyone has developed through personal experience. It is therefore a highly personal approach, shaped by each person’s unique background. Its guiding principle is “learning by doing”: thinking through making and acquiring new knowledge through direct, hands-on experience.

I found it particularly interesting to introduce the cable tie as the recurring theme and central element of the final project in my course—an understated, simple object with a strong functional identity.

Students were asked to design a functional yet aesthetically engaging object for the home environment, using a SapiSelco cable tie as the key component and combining it with any other materials they considered appropriate. The aim was to challenge them by limiting the available materials and encouraging them to explore new solutions through a cross-disciplinary approach. This process of experimentation led to the wide range of projects presented and collected in this publication.
